P0316 - Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)
The most common method of misfire detection is by using the Engine Speed Sensor signal to monitor the crankshaft speed / acceleration during each power stroke. Some systems may also monitor the Oxygen Sensor or Exhaust Pressure as part of misfire detection.
This fault code will occur when the ECM detects erratic variations in the crankshaft speed immediately after start up which cannot be identified as being caused by a particular cylinder. The fault may be caused by fuel, ignition or mechanical faults.
It is recommended to check the Crankshaft Position Sensor output signal as the ECM can use this sensor for misfire detection. This fault code can be caused by any aspect of the engine mechanical, fuel or ignition systems. The Crankshaft Position Sensor is usually the main sensor used for misfire detection, full checks on the sensor and wiring are recommended. Further testing will be required to determine the cause of the misfire this may include.
